From this vista you will see the wonderful peaks along the Cordillera Blanca including Mount Huascaran at el. 6768 m.a.s.l / 22199 feet a.s.l..

NATIONAL PARC OF HUASCARAN

The Huascaran National Park is located in the department of Ancash, in the Cordillera Blanca massif, the world's highest tropical mountain chain. It was established as a national park in 1975 over an area of 340,000 hectares and declared Mankind Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

The park is home to one of the most extraordinary high-mountain eco-systems on Earth: 663 glaciers, 269 lakes and 41 rivers, as well as hundreds of mountain peaks, 26 of which top 6,000 meters. The park teems with an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including 800 plant species and dozens of kinds of animals.

noleft

It is also the site of 33 pre-Inca archaeological complexes (such as Wilcahuain) and dozens of Quechua-speaking peasant farming communities who use traditional farming and livestock herding techniques.

The park was created in 1975 with the purpose of preserving the wild animal and plant life, geological formations, archeological sites, and beautiful scenery. Inside the 340,000 hectares, which include almost the entire White Cordillera, you can observe the great variety of high Andean plant life like the Puyas Raimondi in the areas of Quesque and Pumapampa (this flower is considered the biggest in the plant realm, and once it has blossomed, the plant dies), and the queñual trees in the Llanganuco Lakes. Of its 663 glaciers, the most impressive are Huascaran (6768 masl/ 22.199 fasl), Huandoy (6395 m.a.s.l. / 20,976 f.a.s.l.), Chopicalqui (6354 m.a.s.l. / 20.841 f.a.s.l.), Hualcan (6122 m.a.s.l. / 20,080 f.a.s.l.), and Alpamayo (5947 m.a.s.l. / 19,506 f.a.s.l.). It also houses a great diversity of birds and animals such as pumas, deer, Andean cats, and three endangered species, the spectacled bear, the Andean deer, and the Andean condor.

The Huscaran National Park is a paradise for mountain climbers, hikers and mountain lovers.

Huaraz: a mountaineer's paradise

The department of Ancash starts on a slightly hilly coastal strip and climbs up to the highest snow-capped mountains in Peru. Spread out along the Callejon de Huaylas, a dazzling valley stuck between two mountain ranges, the Blanca and Negra Cordilleras, you will find picturesque and pleasant cities like Recuay, Carhuas, Yungay, and Caras, while the urban and commercial center of the area is the capital of Ancash, the energetic city of Huarás.

It was between the years 1200 B.C. and 200 B.C. that the Chavín lived in the region, the same that left as their legacy the impressive archeological complex of Chavin de Huantar, which, in 1985, UNESCO placed on the World Cultural Heritage List. Throughout the entire department, you can see the most spectacular snow covered mountains, among them Mount Huascaran (6,768 m.a.s.l./ 22199 feet a.s.l), the tallest peak in Peru. In addition, there are hot springs and spectacular lakes as those of Llanganuco; in all, it is an area perfect for adventure sports like white water rafting, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and trekking.

The Huascaran National Park, placed on the World Natural Heritage List by UNESCO, guards wildlife species in its beautiful surroundings like condors, vicuñas, deer, pumas, Andean foxes, and viscachas.

EXCURSIONS DAY TOURS from Huaraz

The Huayhuash Cordillera, a well kept secret…

The Huayhuash Cordillera is one of the mountain ranges least known in the world and is nonetheless considered one of the most beautiful ones. It stretches over 20 miles and includes a string of snow capped peaks of great beauty.
Reaching the Giants of the Cordillera has to be deserved but once arrived at the summit of a pass, we find ourselves in front of mystical summits such as: the Mituraju (el; 5750 m.a.s.l.), the Rondoy (el. 5870 m.a.s.l.), the Jirishanca (el. 6094 m.a.s.l.), the Yerupaja (el. 6617 m.a.s.l., considered the most difficult ascent of the region), the Yerupaja Chico (el. 6089 m.a.s.l.), the Yerupaja Sur (el. 6500 m.a.s.l.) and finally the Siula Grande (el. 6344 m.a.s.l.). Surrounded by magnificent snow-capped peak, are tucked spectacular glacial lagunas and stunning glaciers, we discover the best of the Andes.

It is a high-altitude trek, with passes between 4000 and 5000 meters high. Leaving from Sorata, a charming colonial village located at only 2700 meters, this trek takes us to a part of the Cordillera still seldom visited, where we might have the opportunity to see some condors . . .

Trek

5/6 days

from March to November

Bolivia

Along the way...

This altitude trek (entirely comprised between 4500 and 5000 meters above sea level) requires a good acclimatization.
It takes us to the exploration of the nicest part of the Cordillera Real, across the sumptuous landscapes mountain ranges of Condoriri (el. 5648 m.a.s.l.), Maria Lloco (el. 5522 m.a.s.l.) and Huayna Potosi (el. 6088 m.a.s.l.). The path following the hillsides is dotted with lagunas where the llamas accompanying us on this short Andean crossing will quench their thirst.
Nothing can be better than to finish our adventure by the ascent of Huayna Potosi. From the summit, the view embraces from the altiplano from La Paz to Lake Titicaca.

PROGRAM

DAY 1 : LA PAZ – LAGUNA TUNI – LAGUNA JURIKHOTA (el. 4700 m.a.s.l.)

Difficulty: 4 to 6-hour hike a day. Good physical condition required.
Departure from La Paz at 8 a.m. in our private vehicle for the village of Tuni, starting point of our trek (a 3-hour trip).
After skirting the lake of the same name, we go over a pass at an elevation of 4900 meters above sea level, before descending to Laguna Juri Khota (a 4-hour walk). From there we have a very beautiful view of the “Cabeza de Condor”, or the Condor's Head also known as El Condoriri, dominating the scenery (el.5648 m.a.s.l.). It forms, with the two adjacent summits, the Condoriri range, in the shape of a condor with tucked wings.
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Ascent time: 4h; Elevation gain: +400m / -200m

DAY 2 : LAGUNA JURIKHOTA – LAGUNA CONGELADA – PASO AUSTRIA - LAGUNA CHIARKHOTA (el. 4670 m.a.s.l.)

From Laguna Jurikhota we begin by ascending up a steep slope to reach, an hour and a half later, the Laguna Congelada, (two glaciers literally fall into its icy waters), a jewel nested at an altitude of 4900 meters at the foot of El Condoriri (el. 5650 m.a.s.l.).
From there we keep climbing to a second pass (Paso Austria, 5120 m.a.s.l. / one hour ascent) before descending on the other side towards El Condoriri and El Pequeño Alpamayo base camp, at the edge of Laguna Chiarkhota (el. 4670 m.a.s.l. / 1h30 descent).
Just before reaching the pass, we have the option to climb Pico Austria (el. 5300 m.a.s.l.) to admire the incredible views it offers over the Cordillera Real (45-minute climb, 20-minute descent).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +645m / -670m

DAY 3 : LAGUNA CHIARKHOTA – LAGUNA WICHU KHOTA (el.4680 m.a.s.l.)

We leave the Condoriri behind us, pass at the base of the Black Needle and eventually reach the Jallayko Pass (el. 5025 m.a.s.l.).
We then drop into the very beautiful and steep Jistaña Valley, before ascending the Tillipata Pass (el. 5000 m.a.s.l.). The spectacular scenery over the myriad of lagunas down below is ample reward for our efforts. Then another downhill to Laguna Wichu Khota, where we set up our camp, at the foot of María Lloco (el. 5522 m.a.s.l.).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 7h; Elevation gain: +845m / -935m

DAY 4 : LAGUNA WICHU KHOTA – CAMPO CANAL (el. 4800 m.a.s.l.)

We progress amongst the lagunas, until the ancient camp for mine Santa Fe. A short detour to a small nearby summit dominating the camp allows us to get a nice view over all the lagunas. We then climb up to our camp, surrounded by the summits of Imilla Apachita, Maria Lloco and Huayna Potosi (el. 6088 m.a.s.l.). The view is superb (4/5-walk).
The most courageous will be able to hike over to Laguna Glacial del Huayna Potosi. The trail, an ancient dried out stone canal on the hillside, offers wonderful scenery (2-hour round trip).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +320m / -200m

DAY 5 : CAMPO CANAL – HUAYNA POTOSI SHELTER

After loading the gear on our llamas, we head for the Milluni pass that we reach in the middle of the morning (el. 5000 m.a.s.l). From there, we overlook the Milluni Valley.
We keep on going towards our shelter by passing Huayna Potosi on our left. At this point the Andes abruptly drop into the Yungas, a green and tropical area. This is the end of our trek.
Hiking time: 4h; Elevation gain: +200m / -300m

OPTION 1: RETURN TO LA PAZ

Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Hotel.
Hiking time: 4h; Elevation gain: +200m / -300m

OPTION 2: HUAYNA POTOSI ASCENT/ DAY 1

DAY 6 : ASCENT OF HUAYNA POTOSÍ / DAY 2 (el. 6088 m.a.s.l.) – LA PAZ

Departure at 2 a.m. for a tentative ascent of the summit. Later on, we descend to the shelter (approximately 10-hour total). Return to La Paz with private vehicle.

Along the way...

The pre-Colombian civilizations of the Altiplano had established commercial relationships with the low valleys and the Amazon Basin, which allowed them to improve their diet by trading their produce for corn and fruit.
In every place where it is possible to cross the Cordillera, there is a pre-Colombian trail descending to the Yungas, or low valleys. The Choro and the Yunga Cruz are the most well-known examples of such paths. The Takesi, with its magnificent paved portions, could be the best preserved of the Incas trails in this area.
This 2 to 3-day trek is ideal for exploring this incredible region of the Yungas and its rich fauna and flora. Progressively, we pass from the mountainous world of the Andes to lush tropical vegetation, waterfalls and old growth forest.

PROGRAM

DAY 1 : LA PAZ – TAKESI – KAKAPI (el. 2790 m.a.s.l.)

Meeting at 6 a.m. in the hotel lobby. Our private vehicle takes us to visit the San Francisco mine (el. 4220 m.a.s.l. / 2h30 trip). The road offers great views. Breakfast and meeting with our team of muleteers. The trek starts with a climb to the Apachetas Pass (el.4650 m.a.s.l.), at the base of peak Takesi. From there, we descend into the deep valleys of the Yungas. The beautiful paved trail takes us to the hamlet of Takesi, then to the small community of Kakapi, where we find our Refuge (shelter).
Cold lunch. All included. Night in shelter (Basic comfort).
Hiking time: 9h; Elevation gain: +430m / -1860m

OPTION “A”: 2 DAYS

THE LEGEND OF SAJAMA

"God is far away and we need to negociate with its Intermediaries, the mountains."

The summits of the Andes have always had their place in the legends of the Altiplano. Here is the most known one, the one of Sajama, volcano culminating at over 6500 meters above sea level and located at the heart of the natural park of the same name (the first created in Bolivia, in 1941).

… A long time ago there was a ruthless war between the mountains. Huayna Potosi, Condoriri, Ancohuma and Illampu all had the same dream: to be highest amongst them all!

"Pacha", the creator, tired of these fights, ordered the end of the hostilities. At the time of the truce, Illimani was the great winner.
But an ambitious neighbor contested his victory. Troubled in his sleep, "Pacha" decided to punish the insolent by cutting his head off.
He used his terrible sling... all the summits, impressed made themselves very small, the wind generated by the cosmic arm burned the fresh scars they had inflicted on each other.
They then heard the hissing of the projectile and the deafening noise of the impact. When the dust finally settled, the whole superior part o the imprudent was missing.
It's head rested far away on the Altiplano and men call him today Sajama, or "exiled" in Aymara.
As far as the remains, missing its head –and summit we can admire, takes the shape, not of a summit, but of a vast snowy plateau- its name is today Mururata, the decapitated...

To read also: Soccer on the top of the Andes

Trek kallawayas - 6 d

Trek of the Healers
Trek in the Apolobamba, land of the famous "Kallawayas"

Trek

6 days

From March to November

Bolivia

This trek takes it the discovery of the splendid Cordillera Apolobamba, on the territory of the Kallawayas.
It is said that they are the last direct descendants of the Tiwanaku lords of whose language they still speak. They are also, and above all, the last knowledge holders of the powerful plants of the Altiplano.
Curva, the village in which our trek begins, is known to be home of the most prestigious indigenous "healers". They then share their talent in all parts of the country, while the best ones leave for Peru, Brazil, and Argentina or in the larger Bolivian cities.
The healing traditions trek will surely fulfill the most demanding trekker in terms of encounters (miners, Indian healers, etc…) and large open Andean spaces. We skirt the Cordillera Apolobamba from one end to the other, between 4000 and 5000 meters of elevation, in a region difficult to access and therefore seldom visited. The trail is bordered on the Western side by eternal glaciers and on the Eastern side by deep valleys dropping all the way to the Amazon.
We will set up camp near rivers, most often below passes. The delight of the scenic beauty and the particular atmosphere of the kallawayas lands (frenetic gold rush, Indian medicine) will largely outweigh the trouble of your efforts.

Program

Day 1: LA PAZ – CHARAZANI – LAGUNILLAS (el. 3780 m.a.s.l.)

Departure from the hotel at 6:30 a.m. in private 4WD. We drive along the shores of mystical Lake Titicaca before crossing numerous charming villages in the style of the Altiplano. We can visit the chapels of the villages of Carabuco and Escoma, described like the “Sixteen chapel” of Bolivia. Then, after a lunch break, a winding road takes us to higher ground from where we can admire the cordillera Apolobamba and the imposing peak of Akamani (el. 5666 m.a.s.l.).
We enter the Ulla Ulla national park, hosting more than 3000 Vicuñas and the most important population of Condors in Bolivia. In the middle of the afternoon, we reach the small community of Charazani where we can take advantage of the Hot Springs to relax (depending on time). After a few more hours of driving going from village to village, we reach the hamlet of Lagunillas (8h of dirt road from La Paz).
Lunch on the way (included). All included. Night at the comfortable Bed and Breakfast of Lagunillas (showers, fire place…).

Day 2: LAGUNILLAS – CURVA – JATUNPAMPA – INCACANCHA (el. 4100 m.a.s.l.)

Difficulty: altitude trek with several passes between 4.500 and 5.000 m.a.s.l. (at least two per day). From 5 to 7-hour walk a day. Good physical condition required.
At about 9 a.m., we depart from the lodging for a walk towards Curva (el. 3780 m.a.s.l.). The village remains one of the most typical in the region: stone houses, Indians in traditional garments (possibility to buy beautiful fabrics, traditional garments and ornaments). We visit the hospital of traditional medicine, where practitioners heal using the regional plants.
A 2-hour hike takes us to the site called Jatunpampa, where we have lunch, accompanied by the sound of the creek nearby, and by an abundant fauna (llamas, viscachas...). Our road continues with the ascent of two passes: the Moyokaka (el. 4500 m.a.s.l.) and the Tambillo (el. 4700 m.a.s.l.), which we climb respectively in 2 and 3 hours. In the distance, we see the Cordillera Real. We descend for 1½-hour to reach the valley where we set up camp (Incacancha, el. 4100 m.a.s.l.).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain/loss: +1000m / -700m

Day 3: INCACANCHA - MIL CURVAS – VISCACHANI PASS – SUNCHULLI (el. 4600 m.a.s.l.)

We depart from our camp at 8 a.m. and start with steep ascent of about 2 hours (Mil Curvas gorge (thousand curves), el. 4585 m.a.s.l.). We arrive at a small altitude lagoon, surrounded by mountains. We have lunch in the valley below, at the foot of some gold mines. We then attack our second pass of the day, the Viscachani pass at el. 4825 m.a.s.l. The summit of the Huayna Sunchulli appears in front of us.
After a 1-hour descent, we reach the gold mine of the “the Virgin of the Rosary” where we can find miners still searching for gold, and even buy some chips of the precious metal.
Finally, at the end of the day, we take a stroll in the “pueblo perdido” (lost village) near the mine, where the Spaniards built their lodgings to exploit the mountain: reminder of the frenzied history of the gold fever for the Spanish crown.
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain/loss: +1000m/-500m

Day 4: SUNCHULLI – SUNCHULLI PASS – KOPPE PASS – PAUCHI COCHO (el. 3700 m.a.s.l.)

We leave our bivouac and begin the steep ascent towards Sunchulli Pass (el. 4905 m.a.s.l.), which we reach after about 2 hours.
From there, we can see a little laguna at the base of the imposing glacier. One more time, we can see the traces of the gold miners etched on the mountainsides.
An easy downhill takes us to our lunch spot. Then, a 2-hour walk up to the Koppe pass (el. 4930 m.a.s.l.) from where we have a splendid view over the Valley of Azanjoce. Superb panorama over the Andes.
We reach our camp (Pauchi Cocho el. 3700 m.a.s.l.) after a steep descent (2 hours from the last pass).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain/loss: +400m/-1300m

Three successive canyons (Pichuara el.4.370 m.a.s.l./ Quimza Cruz el. 4.550m.a.s.l.. / Pelechuco el. 4.700 m.a.s.l.).
We descend into the valley of the Hilo Hilo River before starting a 5-hour ascent, at the end of which we reach the Pelechuco Pass, culmination point of the day. We traverse picturesque villages with their small thatched roof huts and, if we are lucky, we may get a glimpse at the flight of the famous Andean condor.
After a long descent towards Pelechuco (2 hours), we can see the imposing Katantica with its 5560 meters of altitude, it dominates the valley. Arrival in Pelechuco at the end of the day.
Cold lunch. All included. Night at Marina and Reynaldo's (basic comfort).
Hiking time: 7h; Elevation gain/loss: +1300m/-1400m

Along the way

Samaipata, Inca fortress

The village of Samaipata ("altitude rest" in Quechua) is located at 120 km to the West of Santa Cruz, in a sub-Andean area (el. 1650 m.a.s.l.). The Inca archaeological site El Fuerte (the fortress) was, at the time, the most advanced post of the Empire, of which it marked the border until its fall.
It was the administrative center in charge of maintaining the order of the Inca in the region, but its principal function was keeping at bay the frequent invasion attempts of the Guarani Indians. This impenetrable fort offers amongst other things, the largest sculpted stone in the world.

Amboro Park

This 637.000 acres natural reserve is comprised between 280 and 3200 meters above sea level. It abounds in a varied fauna, with amongst others 820 species of birds accounted for, mammals such as the Andean bear, the jaguar, the puma and diverse species of monkeys, some of them unique in the world. The flora is also a source of surprises: giant ferns, monkey tail cactus...

Serranía de los Volcanes

The small village of Bermejo, at 45 Km of Samaipata, is the departing point towards the Serranía de los Volcanes. Hidden at the bottom of a deep valley, the shelter of the volcanoes offers beautiful viewpoints over the reddish "peñascos", covered by tropical forest.

Cuevas waterfalls

20 Km away from Samaipata, in a scenery identical to those of the movie the “Mission”, are located the Cuevas waterfalls, an attraction little known in the area but worth the detour.

Daily program

Day 1: SANTA CRUZ – SAMAIPATA – CUEVAS - SAMAIPATA

Departure from our hotel at 8:30 a.m., in our private vehicle, for the Inca fortress of Samaipata. Beautiful area located between the Amazon and the Andes where we find the remains of the most isolated Inca fortress of the empire, erected to control the invasion of the Guaranis Indians.
Visit of the site.
We then visit the waterfalls of Cuevas. Option to take a bath in a dreamscape...
Lunch and dinner open. Cabañas Land House.

Day 2: SAMAIPATA – AMBORO PARK – GIANT FERNS – VOLCANOES SHELTER

Departure at 8:30 a.m. for the Forest of Amboro Park, where we can observe a few species of giant ferns found nowhere else in the world (Dicksonia Sellowiana and Alsophila Incana) as well as many wild orchids varieties.
Excursion on foot to the Volcano Shelter / animal spotting. Option of a swim in the waterfalls near the refuge before returning to Samaipata.
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Night in the volcanoes shelter (limit 12 people).

Day 3: VOLCANOES SHELTER – SANTA CRUZ

Transfer by vehicle To Bermejo
Return to Santa Cruz at the end of the day.
Cold lunch. Dinner open. Hotel

Day 4: EXTRA DAY check with us

Included

- Spanish-speaking driver
- Entrance to parks and cultural places mentioned in program
- Private transportation
- 2-star hotels in twin o triple room including breakfast
- Meals mentioned

Not included

PARATY

At the beginning of the 18th Century the Brazilian Bandeirantes, mixed-race Brazilians (Indian mother, Portuguese father) discovered the fabulous gold and diamonds in Minas Gerais, some hundred kilometers north of Paraty, in the heart of a still virgin territory.
This opened the most direct path from the mines to the coast, through the mountains covered in thick tropical forest, which spread from the coast to the central plains.

This gold trail, whose cobblestones today recall its history, opens out on to an area scattered with bays and inlets, natural shelters only known by pirates lying in wait for merchant ships traveling along the coast of the New World: this area is known as Paraty.
The port grew rapidly, stimulated by the important movement of traffic that it organized. The boats arrived from Africa carrying slaves and manufactured produce to leave again towards Portugal carrying quantities of diamonds and gold brought to the coast by an unending line of mule convoys.

Prosperity continued until a new, more direct path, caused an upheaval in the destiny of Paraty making what was none other than a coastal village the centre of a commercial triangle: Rio de Janeiro did not take long to catch up …a reverse of history caused the brutal destruction and almost abandonment of Paraty but nevertheless allowed the town to preserve its treasures which remain until the present day.

Paraty, World class Heritage site

Sauntering along the narrow cobbled streets, one discovers one of the most beautiful colonial heritages of Brazil, World class Heritage listed by UNESCO.
Perfectly renovated dwellings and the four magnificent Baroque churches, a heritage that recalls the pomp of the past centuries and the collection of small low houses of the bourgeoisie "sobrados" from the 18th Century, in the centre of town, where cars are forbidden - emit a nostalgic charm.
Views from the jetty, the sea, the church, the hills and the sky complete a perfect harmony of shades of white, green and blue.

Paraty, idyllic surroundings

The surroundings of Paraty equally contribute to this famous growth.
Tropical mountains which “fall” into the ocean, long deserted beaches of fine white sand, an abandoned lighthouse off a fishermen's village, islands straight from paradise surrounded by turquoise seas, undulating hinterland rich in local products, this is what you find in the region of Paraty, a land of incredible nature rich in history and traditions.
Traveling through the national parks next to this little colonial city (Serra da Bocaina, Serra do Mar, Saco de Mamangua, Ponta de Joatinga), the curious will discover fazendas, Pinga distilleries (nickname for Cachaça, the national alcohol) sugarcane fields and coffee plantations with as much heritage as secular culture.
Today Paraty possesses a modern feel all year long for rich cultural life: the Pinga festival, the Book Festival, numerous shows and exhibitions … the informed traveler will undoubtedly love it, even in only a few days stay.

Paraty: 1-day programs

VISIT OF HISTORICAL CENTER (half-day)

Our English-speaking guide picks us up at 09:00 (or 14:00) at the pousada for a guided visit to the historical centre of the village.
Nestled between ocean and the foothills of the Serra do Mar, Paraty, registered as a word heritage site with UNESCO, shelters one of the most beautiful colonial heritage of Brazil. Along narrow, paved streets, we discover this incredible heritage, bearing witness to the wealth of the 17th and 18th century: sublime mansions, four superb baroque churches, one being the church of Santa Rita de Cassia hosting today a museum of sacred art.
Paraty, a very animated town night and day, offers numerous nearby beaches.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

BOAT TOUR IN THE BAY / private service

At 09:00 the captain drives us to the pier to embark our private craft, a fishing boat equipped for the tour (benches and cushions, cooler…).
Day open in the Bay of Paraty, traveling from island to island, beach to beach.
Stops planned on different sites suitable for swimming or snorkeling in the company of hundreds of fish (mask and snorkel included): ilha Comprida, saco da Velha, praia Vermelha...
Return to Paraty at around 16:00 / 17:00.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

Option: English-speaking guide.

SEA KAYAKING IN THE BAY OF PARATY

Our English-speaking guide meets us at the pousada at 08:45 for a transfer towards the beach of Jabaquara, t the end of the village.
There, we embark on our sea-kayaks for a half-day (or a full-day) excursion on the silky waters of the Bay of Paraty, between deserted islands and quiet beaches.
We can swim and practice diving surrounded by schools of multicolored fish.
Return to Paraty at noon or at the end of the day.

Note 1: minimum 2 people, maximum 8 people - 1 local English-speaking guide up to 3 people, 2 local guides from 4 to 8 people.

Note 2: single or double kayaks with life vests, waterproof bag, mask and snorkle (bring a water bottle along) / safety support: motor barge.

Note 3: This program can also be organized over a longer period of time, with lodging with local hosts (on the islands and on deserted beaches), check with us.

PARATY'S BACK COUNTRY – TOWARDS THE SERRA DA BOCAINA AND CUNHA

09:00 departure, in private vehicle, with our English-speaking guide, towards the mountainous backcountry of Paraty, located in the National Park of Serra da Bocaina.
This area is only reachable by a dirt track, which was until the 70s the only terrestrial way to connect Paraty to the rest of the word.
Today abandoned for the use of the coastal road, this track takes us through the dense and green scenery of the Atlantic forest (the famous "Mata Atlantica") to the Cunha pass. The contrast is striking: there, at over 1000 meters above sea level, the hills covered with flowers and the narrow valleys make us forget the marine and tropical air, yet so close.
The picturesque village of Cunha seems sheltered from all outside influence. Numerous ceramic artistes have moved their workshops there, near the local market where we can find all kinds of delicious local products (honey, pine nuts…).
Visit of the village and of its memorable workshops. We visit the ones of the Japanese Mieko Ukeseki and of the Brazilian Alberto Cidraes (possibility of participating in a workshop). Return at the end of the day to Paraty.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

IDYLLIC BEACHES AND FISHING VILLAGES OF THE COSTA VERDE

Departure at 09:00 with our very knowledgeable local driver. First stop, the charming fishing village of Picinguaba, hidden in the recesses of a beautiful Bay.
A few miles away, we can stroll along the immense beach of fazenda, many miles of white sand, often absolutely deserted, and a paradise for a swim.
We can lunch at local stalls. Family style cooking (specialty: shrimps and fish) simple, but delicious. We can complete this savory meal by a coconut "gelada" (cool coconut juice).
Depending on the weather and our mood, we continue on to the remote village of Paratymirim, its colonial church, its long beach and its blue and green waters…
On the way back towards Paraty, we stop in a distillery of cachaça, (or "pinga", the production of this area is famous in the whole country).
Return to Paraty at the end of the day.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

Option: English-speaking guide.

PARATY - PRAIA DO SONO – PARATY

Trek – 1½-hour of actual walking - 150 meters of elevation gain- easy

Departure from Paraty at 08:30 with a local minibus with our English-speaking guide, for the village of Laranjeiras (30-minute trip). The trek starts by a short incline then enters the Atlantic forest (Mata Atlantica), at the heart of the" Ecological preservation area of Joatinga ".
After an hour and a half of pleasant walking, we reach, at lunch time, the hamlet of Sono, located on the border of one of the nicest beaches of the region, Praia do Sono, literally meaning "sleepy beach". With such a name, we don't want to miss it!
Lunch break in a local stall. Splendid decor. The paradisiacal beach is usually deserted. Return by motorboat to Trindade then by local bus to Paraty at the end of the day.

FAZENDA MURYCANA & PENHA

Our English-speaking guide meets us at the pousada at 09:00
He drives us in a private vehicle, to the Fazenda Murycana, about 6 miles from Paraty. The site is located in a luxuriant forest in the mountain.
This place is loaded with history. Known in the year 1700 under the name of “Three Farms”, the fazenda received at this time travelers who would spend a night there before engaging in the gold trail towards the Minas Gerais. In the opposite direction, the conveyers used to stop at the fazenda to hide their precious charge (gold and precious stones) in the forest while they checked to make sure the coast was safe of pirates.
The guide dedicates one hour to the discovery of the property; we find there a small museum and alcohol of local pinga.
The market for local produce gives us a taste of the flavors and traditions of the region of Paraty. Dona Hilda might offer us her "home made" coffee (if she is in a good mood!).
We then head on a horseback ride across the trails criss-crossing the National Park of Bocaina. Nature, here, contrasts with the seaside; a surprising mix of altitude and tropical plants. Because of the numerous rivers and waterfalls spread out over the area, the air is cool. The highlight of the day, and a good reason to visit this area, is the group of Pedra Branca waterfalls; an impressive show of nature.
We can then lunch in a delicious local restaurant (its specialty being the suckling pig) before heading for the cachoeira de Penha, a natural site of exceptional beauty.
This gigantic natural limestone toboggan is perfect to spend the rest of the afternoon, in the coolness offered by rivers and waterfalls.
Depending on the day of the week, visit of a distillery (the area is famous for its cachaça).
Return to Paraty at the end of the day.
Meals not included. Night in a pousada.

Option: Tyrolean and aerial rope course at the fazenda.

Evening options in Paraty

Evening Capoeira

We attend a Capoeira presentation given by the local Mestre (Master) and his students. He will maybe invite us to participate to the exercises (the representation lasts 45 minutes).
Capoeira is one of the most fascinating aspects of the Brazilian culture. The capoeirist is at the same time an athlete, a dancer, an acrobat, a performance artist, a comedian and a musician.
Being forbidden to practice martial arts (which could make them more dangerous in the case of a rebellion against their masters) the slaves transvestite their fights into spectacular gymnastic moves, thus creating a unique ritual, in reality a real preparation to combat.
Thus was born the Capoeira, dance as much as martial art, and result of forced encounters between the different African cultures on the Brazilian territory over the three hundred years that lasted slavery.
One of the particularities of Capoeira is its musicality. This martial art is indeed practiced over rhythms soberly played using drums, tambourines, ant the emblematic instrument of the Capoeira, the Berimbau and a wooden arc stretched by a wire and ornate with a calabash serving as the sound box.
Forbidden and suppressed for a long time, even after the abolition of slavery, the Capoeira was only authorized by the government in 1937 when it finally became recognized for its cultural, educative and artistic value.
It is nowadays extensively taught and practiced, in the schools and on the streets, but also in the universities, theatres workshops, circus schools and the sportive centers in Brazil as well as in the rest of the world.

Note: the representations are irregular, check with us to organize the evening.

Evening gastronomy / Cooking Academy (meal and wine included)

In the evening, we are welcome at Yara and Richard's, who opened their cooking workshop in their superb house located in the historical center.
Our hosts are dedicated to promote the pleasures of the Brazilian table.
The recipes of the day are distributed so that we can, if we wish to, participate in the elaboration of dinner. The climax of the evening will of course be the sampling of the concocted dishes…

Note: usually open from Wednesday to Saturday included.

Evening gastronomy & cruise in the Paraty Bay (meal and drinks included)

Yves, a French chef settled in Brazil for a few years, welcome us on his boat, a magnificent Saveiro (sailboat typical of Brazilian coasts) equipped and decorated with taste to offer us an unforgettable evening.
After a welcome aperitif, we sail towards the black and calm waters of the bay of Paraty. The lights of town grow more distant, and soon twinkle in the distance.
We stop in the cove of an island for dinner. Menu a la carte (but to be ordered in advance): Brazilian, Thai, Provencal gastronomy… Yves knows how to cook it all, and knows how to do it with panache! Exclusive atmosphere for an evening deliciously spent at sea.

Note: maximum of 30 people.

Machu Picchu, Wonder of the world

Trekking trips

The combination of ecological diversity and the presence of numerous archaeological points of interest make the Cusco region a privileged destination for trekking enthusiasts.
All the ingredients for the organization of exceptional trips come together here.
The possible itineraries are numerous and varied: Leave Cusco to join the terraces of the Sacred Valley; make THE most popular trek in Latin America, the famous “Inca Trail”; arrive at the foot of Salkantay and come across the tropical valleys that lead you on foot toward Machu Picchu; connect the site of Choquequirao (“the other Machu Picchu”) to Machu Picchu after 9 days hiking from mountain pass to mountain pass…Let our local team from Cusco, regional specialists, lead you by the hand.
Whether you are a novice or are travelling with your family, why not simply take time out to go for a walk and rediscover the feeling and slow rhythm of exploring somewhere on foot. There is no better way to experience and understand the rich environment of the Sacred Valley of Urubamba and the way of life of its inhabitants, descendents of the Inca. We also have several programs for the general public.
Cusco, as well as possessing a wealth of cultural and historical patrimony, is also ideally situated where several massifs join and could therefore, become your “base camp” from which to explore the Cordilleras of Vilcabamba (Salkantay), Urubamba and Vilcanota (including the region´s giant mountain Ausangate, 6,384 m) or the most unusual, Carabaya.
