Los Glaciares National Park – THE CONTINENTAL ICE SHEET

With a total surface area of more than 600,000 hectares, the Los Glaciares National Park stretches from the arid Patagonian Steppe to the Andes range, a natural frontier with the neighboring country of Chile. Stretching over 350 km from north to south, the National Park includes a National Reserve of approximately 180,000 hectares. Just the Southern Patagonian Ice Field alone, the extent of which is the biggest in the world after that of the Antarctic, is worth the trip.
There are also at least 47 major glaciers of which the most notable are the Marconi, Upsala, Agassiz, Moreno, Onelli and Spegazzini glaciers. In addition the Park also contains over 200 less important glaciers. Even if they appear immobile these are in constant movement creating a permanent spectacle. From time to time blocks of ice detach themselves from the glacial façade and fall with a crash into the milky waters of the lakes. It is Perito Moreno, the most famous of the glaciers to be found on Argentino Lake 80 km from El Calafate that invites us to this witness this arresting experience.

EL CHALTEN - FITZ ROY - CERRO TORRE

At the extreme northern end of the Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, at the foot of the granite masses of Mounts Fitz Roy (altitude 3,405 meters) and Torre (altitude 3,128 meters), is the youngest village of the Argentine nation, El Chaltén, founded on October 12 1985. Fitz Roy and Torre are among the most difficult climbs in the world. The first scaling of Mount Fitz Roy was on February 2 1952 by the Frenchmen Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone. The first scaling of Torre Mountain was achieved in 1959 by Cesare Maestri and Tony Egger. Nowadays this climb is the subject of controversy… Please refer to the Le Monde newspaper article below.
It is important to note that the climbing season is very restricted and spans only from mid February to mid March.
From El Chaltén we propose numerous hiking trips within the Park. Generally these treks do not pose any particular difficulty and are carried out in total safety with the presence of a mountain guide. In these mountains and forests you can spot the unique animal species particular to this area, from the discrete pudú, the smallest deer in the world that lives in the dense forest groves, to the huemul, a type of large deer that passes through the woods.
You will also be able to spot and observe rare birds such as the magnificent condor as well as numerous species of parakeets and woodpeckers that live in this, one of the southernmost regions of the world.
Cerro Torre is a rocket shaped Babel whose peak is lost behind the clouds for three hundred days of the year. It is crowned by monstrous petals of frost and ice that balance on kilometers of abysses. Despite not being very high, of an altitude of 3,128 meters, it is the mineral incarnation of the impossible. The most beautiful, hardest, sharpest peak…such superlatives logically inspired the most beautiful lie in the history of alpinism. Three climbers have recently brought back almost definitive proof of what was believed more than thirty years ago.

CERRO TORRE

Reputedly impossible to climb, Cerro Torre in Patagonia has inspired the most beautiful deception in the history of alpinism. Thirty years on we revisit a mythical…but fictive ascent.
