Along the way...

We suggest that you do the entire tour of this magnificent mountain range around the “Giants” of the Cordillera that are Illampu (el. 6370 m.a.s.l.) and Ancohuma (el. 6430 m.a.s.l.).
It is a high-altitude trek, with passes between 4000 and 5000 meters high. Leaving from Sorata, a charming colonial village located at only 2700 meters, this trek takes us to a part of the Cordillera still seldom visited, where we might have the opportunity to see some condors . . .

PROGRAM

DAY 1 : LA PAZ – SORATA (el. 2700 m.a.s.l.)

Departure from the hotel at 9 a.m. in our private vehicle for Sorata (around 3h30, village nested in a green valley at the foot of the majestic Illampu (el. 6368 m.a.s.l.).
If the weather is clear we can perfectly see the snowy summits over the palm trees occupying the village square, at an altitude of 2700 meters. Lunch and dinner open. Hotel.

DAY 2 : SORATA – LACATIYA (3900 m alt.)

Difficulty: altitude trek. Daily 5 to 7-hour walk. Good physical condition required.
In the morning, on the outskirt of the village, we meet our team of muleteers. The trek starts by a long uphill to the village of Lacatiya (el. 3900 m.a.s.l.), our first bivouac. Illampu dominates us all day from its 6430 meters.
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac in the community.

DAY 3 : LACATIYA – PASO ILLAMPU – UTJAÑA PAMPA (3900 m alt.)

We start the day by climbing to the Paso Illampu (el. 4750 m.a.s.l.), from where we can admire the mastodons that are the North Peak of Illampu (el. 6370 m.a.s.l.) and the Pico Schulze (el. 5950 m.a.s.l.). We then descend on the Northern slopes of the Cordillera, to Estancia Utjaña Pampa. Some old fashion gold mines still exploited can be found in this area.

Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +850m / -850m

DAY 4 : ESTANCIA UTJAÑA PAMPA – JISKA COCOOYO (3900 m alt.)

In the morning we climb the Khorvasini Pass (el. 4475 m.a.s.l.). We then descend towards the mining village of Cocoyo, located at the bottom of a green valley (el. 3500 m.a.s.l.). After we clear the village, the beautiful valley of Sarani appears on our right. We climb to our camp, located half way up the pass.

Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +975m / -975m

DAY 5 : JISKA COCOOYO – PASO SARANI – VALLE CHAJOLPAYA (4350 m alt.)

In the morning we climb the Sarani Pass (el. 4520 m.a.s.l.) by following the Umajalanta range (el.5730 m.a.s.l.). The descent brings us into a beautiful open valley, and to the hamlet of Chajolpaya (el.4090 m.a.s.l.). We turn right and follow the river of the same name uphill until we reach our camp.
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +900m / -450m

DAY 6 : VALLE CHAJOLPAYA – PASO CALZADA – CHOJÑA KOTA (4700 m alt.)

We follow the Valley before starting to ascend towards the Calzada Pass (el. 5050 m.a.s.l.), stuck between Peaks Kasiri (el. 5860 m.a.s.l.) and Calzada (el. 5650 m.a.s.l.). We are now back on the Southwestern side of the Cordillera. The descent first takes us to Laguna Carizal and then to Laguna Chojña Kota, where we set up camp.
Cold lunch. Everything included. Bivouac.
Hiking time: 6h; Elevation gain: +700m / -350m

DAY 7 : CHOJÑA KOTA – CHULLUNKAYANI (4500 m alt.) – LA PAZ

From Chojña Kota (“Laguna Verde” in the Aymara language), we slowly descend to the hamlet of Chullunkayani, where we encounter the vehicle that takes us back to La Paz (3 hour-trip). Cold lunch. Dinner open.
Hiking time: 3h; Elevation gain: +200m / -300m

General sales conditions

Your trip will be confirmed once we receive a deposit of 30% of the total amount on our Bolivian account or on our web site (Visa card icon on the top right; enter your name as the reference). The balance must be paid upon arrival in Bolivia in American dollars or Euros.

Important

- As a security measure, each traveler needs to provide photocopies of passport and individual insurance documentation.
- If you are planning to travel to Brazil, please note that the Brazilian authorities request the yellow fever vaccine certificate to all travelers coming from Bolivia. If you do not leave the transit zone at the airport, it is not required.
