Along the way

Sucre’s surroundings offer unexpected scenery: the imposing Cordillera de Frailes, including colorful canyons resembling western landscapes, forgotten Inca trails, Crystalline natural pools, giant meteor crater and prehistoric cave paintings… The possibilities are infinite.

Daily program

 

On foot…

1-day trek:

Day 1: SUCRE – CHATAQUILA – CAMINO DEL INCA – CHAUNACA – SUCRE

Difficulty: Off-beaten-path. Good physical condition required.
9 a.m. departure from the hotel in our private vehicle for Chataquila (el. 3726 m.a.s.l.) to the West of Sucre (2h). Here, we start our walk by the visit of the stone chapel dedicated to the Virgin de Chataquila.
The Cordillera de los Frailes is in front of us. It will take us 5 hours to reach Chaunaca (el. 2900 m.a.s.l.) following a pre-Hispanic paved trail equipped with drainage system. We will be able to see some pre-historical cave paintings in lush vegetation over the 6-kilometer walk.
In our private transport, we return from Chaunaca to Sucre at the end of the day (2h).
Lunch on the way (included). Dinner open. Hotel.

 

2-day trek:

Day 1: SUCRE – CHATAQUILA – CHAUNACA

We leave our hotel at 9 a.m. in our private vehicle for Chataquila (el. 3726 m.a.s.l.) to the West of Sucre (2h). Here, we start our walk by the visit of the stone chapel dedicated to the Virgin de Chataquila. The Cordillera de los Frailes is in front of us.

All included. Night in the small hotel of Samay Huasi.

Day 2: CHAUNACA – MARAGUA – SUCRE

Departure in the morning for the Crater of Maragua (el. 3100 m.a.s.l), geological formation from where we can observe the San Antonio River and “Devil’s Canyon”. From there you can take a 5 hour-hike round-trip to reach the crater and observe the dinosaur imprints. A shorter hike is also possible near Chaunaca.
This second option is less tiring and allows you to walk on Inca trails as well as to appreciate the handicraft of the Jalck’a culture.
Return to Sucre in a private vehicle at the end of the afternoon.
Lunch on the way (included). Dinner open. Hotel.

 

3-day trek:

Day 1: SUCRE – CHATAQUILA – CHAUNACA

Day 2: CHAUNACA – MARAGUA

Departure in the morning for the Maragua Crater (el. 3100 m.a.s.l), geological formation from where we can observe the San Antonio River and a change in vegetation.
A 5 hour-hike is necessary to go all the way around the crater and reach the village of the same name. Numerous handicraft shops (Jalck’a culture).
All included. Lodging with host or in the community school (basic comfort).

Day 3: MARAGUA – CHAUNACA – SUCRE

We have the option of numerous hikes in the area of Chaunaca. They take us on pre-Hispanic trails equipped with drainage systems and give us the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the Jalck’a culture.
A private vehicle takes us to Sucre at the end of the day.
Lunch on the way (included). Dinner open. Hotel.

 

On horseback …

½-day ride:

Day 1: SUCRE / CHEVAL – YOTALA (½ day)

Difficulty according to the level of participants.
Meeting at 9 a.m. in the hall of the hotel. We follow Río Yotala, in our private vehicle, before arriving to the village of the same name, where our horses are waiting for us (20-minute ride).
A 3-4-hour horse-back ride. Depending on your level, your guide takes you to the village of Ñujchu, Río Cachimayu or the hills of Siguayo.
Return to Sucre before lunch. Lunch and dinner open. Hotel.

 

1-day ride:

Day 1: SUCRE / HORSE –QUATALLA VALLEY AND 7 WATERFALLS

3-4-Hour horse-back ride. Level: easy.
Meeting at 9 a.m. in the hall of the hotel. After meeting with our horses, we start our ascent above town before descending to the Quatalla Valley where we find the 7 waterfalls.
We abandon our horses for a walk along the river. We can also climb to the highest waterfall or swim in the pool of the first one (always full even during the low season).
After we fully enjoy this wonderful area, we return to Sucre on horseback.
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open Hotel.

Day 1: SUCRE / HORSE – YOTALA – CACHIMAYU - ÑUJCHU

6 to 7-hour horseback ride. Level: Intermediary/difficult.
Meeting at 9 a.m. in the hall of the hotel. After meeting with our horses, we cross the Río Cachimayu Bridge. The trail ascends towards the ancient hacienda of Pitantorilla.
We follow the hillside until reaching the community of Tipoyo and then descend in the canyon of the same name. These narrow canyons take us back down to Río Cachimayu where our vehicle awaits us to take us back to Sucre.
Most beautiful horseback ride around Sucre!
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Hotel.

 

By mountain bike…

½-day ride:

Day 1: SUCRE / MOUNTAIN BIKE – PAMPAS (½ day)

14.5 miles, about a 4-hour mountain bike ride. Good physical condition required.
We meet in the hall of the hotel at 830 a.m. We depart on our mountain bike. We climb above Sucre, then follow the winding roads through lush forests. The viewpoints over the surrounding country are beautiful with the Cordillera in the background and the town below.
Lunch and dinner open. Hotel.

 

1-day ride:

Day 1: SUCRE / MOUNTAIN BIKE – QUATALLA VALLEY AND 7 WATERFALLS

10 miles, about a 3-hour of mountain bike ride. 1-hour walk.
Meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the hall of the hotel. We start our ascent above town before descending in the Quatalla Valley where we find the 7 waterfalls.
We leave our bikes for a hike along the River. We can also climb to the highest waterfall or swim in the pool of the first one (always full even during the low season).
After we fully enjoy this wonderful area, we return to Sucre on our bikes.
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open Hotel.

Day 1: SUCRE / MOUNTAIN BIKE – PANCHO VILA VILA (1 day – only on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays)

34 miles, about a 6-hour mountain bike ride. Good physical condition required
Departure at 7:30 a.m., to catch our train to Vila Vila. We get on our bikes after a two and a half hour ride to slowly bike back to Sucre on rough terrain. Succession of uphill and downhill in a beautiful setting.
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Hotel.

 

By parapente …

½-day flight:

Day 1: SUCRE / PARAPENTE – CACHIMAYU (1 day)

Beginner level – Tandem flight 8 a.m. departure from the hotel for the parapenting site.We drive through beautiful scenery.
Tandem-flight with a certified instructor. Return to Sucre before noon. Lunch and dinner open. Hotel.
Note: la the length of the flight is dependent on weather conditions.

Important

- As a security measure, each traveler needs to provide photocopies of passport and individual insurance documentation.
- If you are planning to travel to Brazil, please note that the Brazilian authorities request the yellow fever vaccine certificate to all travelers coming from Bolivia. If you do not leave the transit zone at the airport, it is not required.
