General Information

The least known mountain range in Bolivia is certainly the splendid Apolobamba Cordillera, to the Northeast of Lake Titicaca. To access it, we cross Ulla Ulla National Park, a natural reserve for vicunas and alpacas.
The range is located on the territory of the Kallawaya, an ethnic group, which are believed to be the last direct descendants of the Tiwanaku lords of whose language they still speak, the Pukina. They are also, and above all, the last knowledge holders of the powerful plants of the Altiplano. Curva, the village in which our trek begins, is known to be home of the most prestigious indigenous "healers". They then share their talent in all parts of the country, while the best ones leave for Peru, Brazil, and Argentina or in the larger Bolivian cities.
The healing traditions trek will surely fulfill the most demanding trekker in terms of encounters (miners, Indian healers, etc…) and large open Andean spaces. We skirt the Cordillera Apolobamba from one end to the other, between 4000 and 5000 meters of elevation, in a region difficult to access and therefore seldom visited. The trail is bordered on the Western side by eternal glaciers and on the Eastern side by deep valleys dropping all the way to the Amazon.
And as far as physical difficulty goes, it is true that some of the climbs up to altitude passes (between el. 4700 and 5100 m.a.s.l.) require the best of each one, but the beauty of the scenery and the particular atmosphere of the Kallawayas lands will largely outweigh the trouble of your efforts. After a 5-day trek, we reach Pelechuco, one of the oldest Spanish strongholds of Bolivia. One of the most beautiful Andean trek Bolivia has to offer. If you meet other trekkers on the way, you are surely dreaming…

Access

Difficult, which makes its interest. By 4WD, pass by Puerto Acosta and then take the road to Charazani; about a 10-hour trip from La Paz. By bus, departure on Wednesdays from the “Cementerio”; between 18 and 2-hour trip!

Other trek Very exposed: Apolo Trek

Length: 8 days.
Difficulty: 6 to 7-hour walk per day, for experienced trekkers in good physical condition.
Starting from Pelechuco, this trek descends towards the national park of Madidi, all the way to Apolo. To be considered only by those in quest of true adventures. After ascending a pass at 4700 meters above sea level, we gradually descend towards the tropics. Madidi Park shelters the largest bird preserve in the world and of course the sceneries are fabulous. A guide is mandatory. Check with us for this itinerary, which is adaptable according to the characteristics and experience of your group.

Climate

See Cordillera Real. Same.

Geographical characteristics

The Apolobamba Cordillera is the northern continuation of the Cordillera Real, bordering Lake Titicaca. Same nature, tectonic origin, following the same axis NO-SE, same dimension as the Cordillera Real. The range continues in Peru. Very wild and remote.
